HC Deb 04 July 1980 vol 987 cc727-8W
Mr. Wall

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many illegal citizens band radio sets have been seized by the Customs and Excise so far in the current year, and in the comparable period in 1979.

Mr. Peter Rees

[pursuant to his reply, 3 July 1980, c. 677.]: 721 citizens' band radio sets were seized by Customs and Excise in the first quarter of 1980 and 2250 during the whole of 1979. Details are not yet available for the second quarter of 1980 and were not collected on a quarterly basis for 1979.

Mr. Wall

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will estimate the revenue from licence fees, import duties and value added tax that the Exchequer would derive from the legalisation of citizens band or open channel radio.

Mr. Peter Rees

[pursuant to his reply, 3 July 1980, c. 677]: No decisions on legalisation have yet been taken. Since the necessary information about licence fees, value of imported citizens' band radio sets, and expenditure by consumers on these radios is not known, it is not possible to make an estimate of the likely revenue yield.
