HC Deb 19 December 1980 vol 996 c371W
Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if, in view of the fact that the percentage of children staying on at school in Knowsley is lower than in any other area of the country, while the number of unemployed school leavers is the highest, he will now introduce a system of grants for 16 to 18-year-olds staying on at school in such areas.

Dr. Boyson

Local education authorities already have powers to make grants for those continuing in full-time education after the minimum school-leaving age. The Government have no plans to change those arrangements. Allowances are currently paid in Knowsley on a sliding scale on the basis of parental income.
