HC Deb 19 December 1980 vol 996 c371W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many Iraqi students are currently undergoing further education in the United Kingdom; and how many of these students are financed by public funds.

Dr. Boyson

Information in respect of the current academic year is not yet available. In 1979–80 there was a provisional total of 1,082 full-time students from Iraq in colleges of further education in the United Kingdom. Only two students from Iraq on course in December 1979 in any sector of education were funded under the British aid programme. However, until the current academic year, the fees charged to overseas full-time students did not represent the total cost of the course.
