Mr. Michael Spicer

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the average number of CSE, GCE 0 and GCE A-level passes attained per pupil in each region of England and Wales; and what percentage of pupils in each region of England and Wales sit CSE, GCE O-level and GCE A-level examinations.

The estimated number of CSE grades 1–5, GCE O level grades A-C, and GCE A-level passes attained by all English school leavers in 1979–79 by the time they left school were 3.4, 1.9, and 0.4 respectively. Regional estimates are not available but the following tables give the most relevant information together with the percentages of school leavers who had attempted the examinations.
