HC Deb 09 December 1980 vol 995 c340W
Mr. Tom Benyon

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what was the total bill for telephone usage at the Ministry of Defence in the last completed accounting period.

Mr. Hayhoe

The total bill for all Defence telephone usage at Service units, establishments and headquarters at home and overseas, for the period 1 April to 31 October 1980, was approximately £29,100,000, inclusive of VAT, of which some £4,000,000 was for MOD headquarters buildings. The figure covers rental of exchanges and other equipment, private circuits, hire of telephonists, as well as call charges. The attention of all staff has recently been drawn to this expenditure and to ways of making economies.
