asked the Secretary of State for Defence what was the total bill for tea ladies for all ranks and civilian employees; and what was the total number of civilian employees and Service personnel at the Ministry of Defence in the last completed accounting period and in the previous accounting period, respectively.

There is no such grade as "tea lady" employed at the MOD. The average number of civilian employees and Service personnel serving at the Ministry of Defence in 1978–79 and 1979–80 was as follows:

Expenditure on the pay and allowances of civilians at the Ministry of Defence was £75 million in 1978–79 and £88 million in 1979–80. The equivalent costs in respect of Service personnel for these years are estimated to be £22 million and £25 million respectively.
