HC Deb 14 April 1980 vol 982 cc492-3W
Mr. Carter-Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what energy saving and export sales opportunities could arise from improved battery-charging equipment; what steps his Department is prepared to take to encourage and sponsor the development of such equipment; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. David Mitchell

The efficiency of different types of battery charger varies greatly but it is doubtful whether there is much scope for substantial energy saving improvements and such improvements as could be achieved would result in disproportionate cost increases. Export opportunities are limited by the strength of competition, particularly from the Far East. The Department would, however, be prepared to consider whether it would be appropriate to take steps to encourage any promising developments which were brought to its attention.
