HL Deb 06 March 1979 vol 399 cc162-3WA
Lord TAYLOR

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What were the infant mortality rates for each of the following communities for each of the latest five years for which figures are available:

Deaths under 1 year per 1,000 live births
1973 1974 1975 1976 1977
Slough CD* 18.4 16.4 (13.6) (11.8) (13.3)
Harlow CD (9.8) (11.8) (9.0) (10.5) (12.0)
Wolverhampton MCD 22.0 17.9 22.4 20.5 21.0
Cheltenham CD 21.1 (10.7) 23.1 (18.1) (18.0)
Leeds MCD* 20.4 22.1 16.6 15.3 15.0
Harrogate CD* 20.3 14.5 20.7 (13.5) (11.8)
* The statistics are for areas as constituted after the reorganisation of local government in 1974. Because of changes in boundaries the rates shown for Slough, Leeds and Harrogate for 1973 are estimates and are not directly comparable with the rates for 1974–77.

Rates calculated from less than 20 deaths have been placed in brackets to indicate their lesser significance.
