asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the total number of war widows and other widows, respectively, in Carlisle and Cumbria.

It is estimated that there are some 350 war widows in Cumbria

The Whitley Council keeps these rates under review to ensure that they reasonably reflect the cost to staff of using their cars on NHS work. Furthermore, the council is currently sponsoring a fact.finding study of the adequacy of the present mileage allowance arrangements. The results of this study, which are expected to be available at the end of this year, will provide the basis for a review of the present arrangements.

but it is not known how many of these are in Carlisle. Nor is information available as to how many other widows live in these areas.
