HC Deb 18 June 1979 vol 968 c425W
Mr. Hooley

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether a divorced person may reckon the national insurance contributions of the former spouse, up to the date of divorce, towards the calculation of earnings.related retirement pension.

Mr. Prentice

No. The contributions of a former spouse of a divorced person cannot count towards an earnings.related additional component of a retirement pension for that person. They may, however, be used to help that person satisfy the conditions for a basic retirement pension if he or she has not remarried. Any additional component for which a divorced person qualifies by virtue of his or her own contributions is, of course, payable in addition to the basic pension.
