HC Deb 27 July 1979 vol 971 cc639-40W
Mr. Spearing

asked the Minister of Transport if he will publish in theOfficial Report the approximate train mileage cancelled by British Railways to a recent date in order to save fuel in each of the following categories: scheduled services, "Merrymaker" or other excursions and private charter trains.

Mr. Fowler

The British Railways Board says that, up to 14 July, the fuel economy measures introduced on 11 June had led to the following reductions in train mileages:

Scheduled services 160,000
Excursions and private charter trains 52,000

These figures represent an overall reduction of no more than about 1 per cent.
