HC Deb 13 February 1979 vol 962 cc477-8W
Mr. Dempsey

asked the Secretary of State for Energy whether there are any plans to increase the enrichment capacity of the Anglo-Dutch-German project, URENCO.

Mr. Benn

The three Governments have recently agreed to the build up of capacity at the URENCO plant at Almelo in the Netherlands to 600 tonnes per annum and at Capenhurst to 400 tonnes per annum.

Agreement has also been given to the creation of a third URENCO company, URENCO (Deutschland) and the construction of a centrifuge assembly plant and subsequently an enrichment plant at Gronau in the Federal Republic of Germany.

The three Governments will be consulted before work on an enrichment plant at Gronau begins, and on any subsequent extension of capacity at URENCO plants. The three Governments will continue discussions with a view to their conclusion in 1979, on the formal extension of their collaboration until at least 1991.
