§ Mr. Greville Janner
asked the Secretary of State for Employment what have been the average penalties imposed on individuals and companies, respectively, convicted of offences under the Health and Safety at Work Act in England and Wales and Scotland, respectively.

§ Mr. John Grant:
The Chairman of the Health and Safety Commission informs me that for the period from 1st April 1975—when the "General Duties" provisions Health and Safety at Work Act took effect—and 30th June 1977 inclusive, the information on average fines is as follows:

Scotland … 33 125

These provisional figures do not include prosecutions taken solely under other Health and Safety legislation.

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many directors, managers, secretaries, companies, authorities, firms and individual employees, respectively, have been prosecuted under the Health and Safety at Work Act during each six month or annual period for which records are available; under which sections of the Act; and with what results.

§ Mr. John Grant:
The Chairman of the Health and Safety Commission informs me that information is not available in the exact form required. However, the number of informations laid against employers, officials and employees in 1975, 1976 and the first six months of 1977 for breaches of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 are given below, together with results.
