HC Deb 24 November 1977 vol 939 c833W
Mr. Freud

asked the Secretary of State for Transport (1) how many applications he has received for the provision of patrolled school crossings in Cambridge-shire in the last year; and how many of these applications he has granted;

(2) what are his current criteria for the provision of patrolled school crossings;

(3) if he takes accident near-misses into account when assessing applications for patrolled school crossings;

(4) what is his estimate of the cost of installing and maintaining a patrolled school crossing.

Mr. Horam

Arrangements for school crossing patrols in Cambridgeshire are at the discretion of the county council, which is not required to seek my right hon. Friend's approval. He does not lay down criteria for the provision of patrols as he does for zebra and pelican crossings catering for pedestrians generally. Costs may vary from place to place and could best be ascertained from the authority concerned.
