HC Deb 24 November 1977 vol 939 cc876-7W
Mrs. Wise

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many people died in fires in the United Kingdom in (a) 1975 and (b) 1976.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

The latest year for which complete data are available is 1974: 1,046 people died as a result of fires in that year reported by local authority fire brigades in the United Kingdom. Data for 1975 are incomplete because brigades were unable to report details of all fires attended. Provisional data for 1976 show 895 deaths as a result of fires in that year.
