HC Deb 21 June 1977 vol 933 cc451-2W
Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many women are currently being held in what was the men's top security wing at Durham Prison.

Mr. John

Thirty-five on 31st May.

Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what changes were made to what was the men's top security wing at Durham Prison before women prisoners were moved in.

Mr. John

Such changes to the structure, sanitation and security as were necessary to convert the wing into a self-contained unit suitable for a maximum of 39 women needing to be detained in conditions of high security or control, with its own workshop, chapel, hospital and exercise and visiting facilities.

Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department why women prisoners are being held in what was the men's top security wing at Durham Prison; and what is the age of the youngest woman or girl.

Mr. John

The wing was used for women prisoners until 1965, when it was converted for use by male prisoners. It was restored to female use in 1974 because of a general shortage of closed accommodation for women, and to provide accommodation for category A female prisoners. The youngest inmate is aged 20.
