HC Deb 28 July 1977 vol 936 c454W
Mr. Tim Renton

asked the Secretary of State for Employment whether he has yet decided to make 1st May a Bank Holiday; and what representations he has received on this subject.

Mr. George Rodgers

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will make a statement about the May Day holiday in 1979 and subsequent years.

Mr. Booth

I have already announced that the May Day Bank holiday in England, Wales and Northern Ireland will be taken on Monday 1st May in 1978. After consultations with the TUC, the CBI and the banks, the Government has decided to designate the first Monday in May as the May Day Bank holiday in 1979 and subsequent years in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Scotland has already announced that in Scotland the last Monday in May will be designated a Bank holiday in 1978 and subsequent years.
