HC Deb 28 July 1977 vol 936 cc454-5W
Mr. Grylls

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what was the number of workers in the United Kingdom chemical industry in each of the years 1972 to 1976, the number of accidents in the industry and the number of accidents per 1,000 workers in the chemical industry in each of the years 1972 to 1976; and if he will give the number of accidents per 1,000 workers in British industry generally.

Mr. John Grant

The Chairman of the Health and Safety Commission informs me that data for Great Britain only are available, and only for the years 1972 to 1975. The number of employees quoted in the first column of the table below, is the number employed in the chemical industry, as estimated in the annual census of employment. Not all of those employees are subject to the existing Factories Act legislation and this number employed is reduced by an estimated proportion of administrative technical and clerical staff not at present

Chemical Industry Manufacturing and Construction Industries

*Numbers at risk have been adjusted to exclude administrative technical and electrical workers see text above table).
