§ Mr. Simsasked the Secretary of State for Social Services what steps he has taken to increase the provision of non-smoking accommodation in public places since his speech on the subject on 8th March.

Friend has already made the first of a number of approaches he plans to make to authorities and organisations responsible, for a variety of public places where it would be appropriate, in his view, to introduce or increase provision for non-smokers. Discussions are currently taking place following these approaches.
§ Mr. Edwin Wainwrightasked the Secretary of State for Social Services what action he proposes to take following the recommendation in the recent report of the Royal College of Physicians on smoking and health that tobacco manufacturers should be encouraged in their efforts to develop tobacco substitutes; and what steps he is taking to aid such encouragement.
