HL Deb 23 February 1977 vol 380 c356WA
The Earl of KINNOULL

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, following the appointment of the new Commissioner of Police for the Metropolis for a fixed term of years, they are giving any guidance to police authorities to make future appointments of chief constables on the same basis.

The MINISTER of STATE, HOME OFFICE (Lord Harris of Greenwich)

No. Regulation 86 of the Police Pension Regulations 1973 provides for the compulsory retirement of chief constables on reaching 65 years of age. This does not apply to the Commissioner who is required to retire at such age—not being less than 45—as the Secretary of State may from time to time determine.
