23. Mr. Carson

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many welfare officers are employed in the Maze Prison; and how many prisoners they are responsible for.

Mr. Concannon

There are one senior welfare officer, five welfare officers and one ancillary officer at Her Majesty's Prison Maze serving a prison population of 1,300. There is one ancillary post vacant which it is hoped to fill shortly.

Mr. Carson

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland (1) what is the estimated weekly cost of keeping a prisoner in the new cell blocks at the Maze Prison;

(2) what is the estimated weekly cost of keeping a prisoner in compound accommodation in the Maze Prison.
