HC Deb 16 December 1977 vol 941 c516W
Mr. John H. Osborn

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what assessment he has made of the approximate percentage of time spent by the police force in the United Kingdom dealing with transport, accidents and road offences; and how this compares with equivalent figures for the police forces of each of the member countries of the EEC.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

No accurate estimates have been made, but I think that over England and Wales as a whole between 10 per cent. and 12 per cent. of total police officer time is spent on traffic and related matters. I cannot make any estimate for other member countries of the EEC.
