HC Deb 16 December 1977 vol 941 cc516-7W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will give details of the letters he has received supporting and opposing the Government's approach to the firemen's dispute.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

Up to 14th December, the Home Office had received 146 letters expressing support for a settlement within the Government's pay guidelines, and 1,032 letters supporting the firemen's pay claim.

Mr. George Rodgers

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how he proposes to meet expenditure incurred by his Department as a result of the present fire emergency.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

Parliamentary approval to this new service will be sought in a Supplementary Estimate, for the General Protective Services Vote. Pending that approval, the necessary expenditure will be met by repayable advances from the contingencies fund.
