HC Deb 16 December 1977 vol 941 cc583-4W
Mrs. Bain

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what estimate his Department has made of the cost of awarding full attendance allowance to all kidney patients who have access to home dialysis units.

Mr. Alfred Morris

The cost of paying the higher rate attendance allowance of £14 a week to all kidney patients on haemodialysis at home, regardless of whether or not they satisfied the attendance requirements laid down in the Social Security Act 1975, would be about £1,200,000 per annum.

Mrs. Bain

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the total amount of money paid out to kidney patients, undertaking (a) home dialysis treatment and(b) hospital dialysis treatment, in terms of loss of earnings.

Mr. Alfred Morris

I regret that the information on which to base an estimate is not available. I understand that about 2,200 people undergoing renal dialysis receive attendance allowance.
