HC Deb 15 December 1977 vol 941 cc377-8W
Mr. Teddy Taylor

asked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection what advice he can give to manufacturers of Scotch whisky who are contemplating increasing their prices in the United Kingdom to conform with EEC instructions but who may in consequence receive instructions from the Price Commission to reduce their prices; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Maclennan

The Government are in very close touch with this matter. However, the EEC has given no such instruction and it would be for the company concerned to consider whether any changes might be needed in its system of pric- ing to conform with any decision by the European Commission under the EEC rules of competition. When considering proposed price increases notified to it the Price Commission takes account of all relevant circumstances before deciding upon an investigation.
