HC Deb 07 December 1977 vol 940 cc769-70W
31. Mr. Grocott

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether he will support economic sanctions against South Africa similar to those currently in operation against Rhodesia.

Mr. Rowlands

The situation in South Africa, serious as it is, is not comparable to that in Rhodesia. Economic sanctions would have grave consequences for ordinary people here and throughout Southern Africa. We want to use our links with the Republic to promote peaceful change while there is still time.
