asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether the percentage increase in educational programmes within Her Majesty's prisons corresponds with the percentage increase for all other expenditure relating to such prisons.

The increase in estimated expenditure on educational services in Prison Service establishments, 1977–78, as stated in reply to the hon. Member's Question of 14th March—[Vol. 928, c.8]—is minimal—1ess than 0.1 per cent.—compared with 1976–77. Estimated net current general expenditure on prisons, 1977–78, is approximately 2.8 per cent. higher than in 1976–77.
