HC Deb 25 April 1977 vol 930 c262W
Mr. Ashley

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many iron lungs are available; how many people are dependent upon them; whether he is satisfied with the supply and conditions of the existing machines; whether there are plans to replace or increase the number available; what steps are taken to ensure that this equipment is regularly maintained and that adequate spares are available; and if he is satisfied that staff in the various hospitals in which the equipment is located are sufficiently acquainted with the equipment and trained to use it.

Mr. Alfred Morris

It is not practicable to collect this information centrally as a matter of routine, but I am investigating recent criticisms of present arrangements and will make a statement as soon as possible.
