asked Her Majesty's Government:

For the latest period for which figures are available—

  1. (i) what was the United Kingdom's balance of trade with the USSR;
  2. (ii) what was the USSR's overall balance of trade; and
  3. (iii) if the USSR's overall balance of trade is favourable, what proportion of its trade with the United Kingdom represents.

In the twelve months ended February 1977, there was a crude trade deficit (i.e. the difference between exports valued fob and imports valued cif) of £431 million on the United Kingdom's trade with the USSR. In 1975, the latest period for which information is available, figures reported to the UN show that the USSR's overall position on visible trade was a deficit £1,648 million. In the same year, the United Kingdom's crude trade deficit with the USSR was £180 million.
