§ Mr. Patrick Jenkinasked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he is satisfied with the amount and quality of research into the factors responsible for certain diseases, such as respiratory infections, measles and meningococcal infections among young children.
§ Mr. EnnalsIn general, yes, but there will always be the need to pursue new lines of inquiry as new problems arise and new techniques are developed. The Medical Research Council is the main998W Government-funded body conducting or supporting research in the areas mentioned. It has for many years given strong support to research on infections and many advances have been made. The Department and the Council work in collaboration and, as fruitful lines appear, they are developed.
In addition to funds provided to the Council by the health departments, my Department also supports other research in this field. Research is also undertaken by universities and medical schools.
I am sending the right hon. Gentleman a copy of the annual report of the Medical Research Council for the year 1975–76, which contains appropriate references to work in these fields.
