HC Deb 04 November 1976 vol 918 c682W
Mr. Adley

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what tests his Department has made with the new anti-rabies vaccine developed in West Germany by Dr. Ernest Kuwert; and, if none has taken place in Great Britain, if he will arrange immediately for tests to be undertaken.

Mr. Moyle

I am not aware of a new rabies vaccine developed by Dr. Ernest Kuwert, but I understand that he has recently carried out trials of a rabies vaccine prepared in human cells and manufactured in both France and Germany. The French-made vaccine has been granted a product licence to permit its importation into this country for prophylactic use in persons who may be exposed to rabid animals in the course of their work. The strain of cells used is the W138 strain which has been extensively tested in Great Britain by the National Institute for Biological Standards and Control.
