Mr. Gwilym Robertsasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if, in view of the Prime Minister's speech at Ruskin College, Oxford, she will now make a statement on the Government's policy towards orientating university and polytechnic students to meet industrial needs and the gearing of school curricula towards science, mathematics and engineering.

§ Mrs. Shirley WilliamsI attach a high priority to encouraging more young people to study engineering and applied science at school, to pursue these studies in higher education, and to enter a career in industry. I am studying as a matter of urgency with my right hon. Friends the Secretaries of State for Industry and Employment how this might best be done.
