HC Deb 02 March 1976 vol 906 cc513-4W
16. Mr. Luard

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science, what are the average fees paid by overseas students at universities in the United Kingdom, compared with those paid by United Kingdom students at universities in West Germany, France and Italy, expressed in sterling; and what percentage these represent of the full cost of the education in each case.

Mr. Gerry Fowler

Tuition fees for overseas students at British universities are about £320 a year, or about 13 per cent. of the overall average cost of tuition. Tuition fees are not generally charged in France and West Germany though registration and lectures fees may be; in Italy fees range between £25 and £60. information on costs in these countries is not available.

42. Mr. Andrew F. Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what steps he is taking to combine student grants, and supplementary benefits claimed by students during vacations, into one grant; and whether such a grant will be means tested on the parents' income, or on the students' resources.

Mr. Mulley

I have nothing to add to the answer I gave my hon. Friend on 23rd February.—[Vol. 906, c.41.]

44. Mr. Hardy

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will introduce concessions to allow mature students living away from their families to visit their homes more frequently.

Mr. Gerry Fowler

I assume my hon. Friend is referring to the refund of travelling expenses. Local education authorities may at their discretion refund such expenses for any journeys in addition to those necessary at the beginning and end of each term. I have no present plans to change these arrangements.

Mr. Hardy

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many mature students are currently residing in or near their place of learning and away from their dependants.

Mr. Gerry Fowler

This information is not available in my Department.
