§ Mr. John Mooreasked the Secretary of State for Industry (1) if he will publish in the Official Report a table showing for each year since 1960 what percentage of world production of engineering products was produced in the United Kingdom;
(2) if he will publish in the Official Report a table showing for each year 53W since 1945 what percentage of overall world industrial production was produced in the United Kingdom.
Mr. Alan WilliamsInternational statistics of industrial production are not systematically collected in value form although quality figures are available for some products. Only for 1963 is comprehensive information on output as a whole and in certain broad sectors available in value added form. Thus the UN publication "Growth in World Industry" dated 1969 shows the United Kingdom share of world industrial production in terms of value added as 5.8 per cent. in 1963 and using this information together with production indices could imply shares of 9½ per cent. in 1950 and 4 percent. in 1974. In the same way, the United Kingdom share in the production of metal products—Division 38 of the International Standard Industrial Classification—is shown as 6.6 per cent. in 1963 and may have been 8 per cent. in 1960 and 4 per cent. in 1974. The estimates for 1960 and 1974 are very tentative indeed.
