HC Deb 12 July 1976 vol 915 c42W
Ms Colquhoun

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will advise chief constables of police to ban the use of guard dogs by the police force.

Dr. Summerskill

No. Police do not normally use guard dogs as defined in Section 1 of the Guard Dogs Act 1975; but dogs make a useful contribution to many aspects of police work. Advice is already available on their use and on any risks which may be involved, and we do not consider that further advice is needed at present.
