HC Deb 26 January 1976 vol 904 c70W
Mr. Andrew F. Bennett

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer to what level and at what cost would child tax allowances need to be raised in order to lift all working families with children above the supplementary benefit level.

Mr. Robert Sheldon

Taking the ordinary weekly supplementary benefit rate of £17.75 for a married couple, £3.75 for each child and assuming an average weekly rent addition of £5, the annual supplementary benefit level for married couples with one or more children is on average £190 higher than the corresponding tax threshold for each family size. To increase the tax threshold by this amount for married couples with children would cost about £460 million in 1975–76.
