HC Deb 04 February 1976 vol 904 c655W
Mr. Goodhart

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what research he is carrying out on the effect of low frequency traffic noise on people and buildings.

Dr. Gilbert

The Transport and Road Research Laboratory (TRRL) and the Building Research Establishment (BRE) are jointly engaged in studies of low frequency noise. These are concerned with the extent of the nuisance, the effects on people's ability to perform tasks, the paths by which vibrations are transmitted into homes, and means of insulating windows. The Department is also sponsoring research on a quieter heavy vehicle. This, though mainly aimed to reduce noise at higher frequencies, would also diminish low frequency noise.
