§ Mr. Sillarsasked the Secretary of State for Employment how many people are currently employed in Scotland in shipbuilding; and, of these, how many are employed in Clydeside, Aberdeen, Dundee, and other areas.
§ Mr. GoldingMy Department's employment statistics are analysed according to the Minimum List Headings of the Standard Industrial Classification. This provides a heading for shipbuilding and marine engineering but does not identify shipbuilding separately. At June 1975, the latest date for which detailed employment estimates are available for Scotland, there were 42,900 employees in employment in shipbuilding and marine engineering, including 28,400 on Clyde-side, 1,600 in Aberdeen and 7,000 in Dunfermline.
I regret that the figure for Dundee cannot be given because employment figures are obtained under the provisions of the Statistics of Trade Act 1947 and can be disclosed only in a form which ensures that information about individual undertakings cannot be identified.
