Mr. David Hunt

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will specify the number of employers who participate in the Board of Inland Revenue's quarterly inquiry into pay and tax and the method by which they are selected.

Mr. Robert Sheldon

, pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 6th December 1976; Vol. 922, c. 64], gave the following information:

About 1,150 returns of pay and tax are received from employers each quarter. The sample, which is on a voluntary basis, was chosen from those larger employers from whose tax deduction cards a quarterly breakdown of pay and tax could not be derived.
