HC Deb 04 August 1976 vol 916 cc807-8W
Mr. Alexander Fletcher

asked the Minister for the Civil Service what pro- portion of his Department's contribution to the recently announced public expenditure cuts is represented by the closure of the Edinburgh Civil Service College.

Mr. Charles R. Morris

The estimated saving arising from the closure of the Edinburgh Centre of the Civil Service College represents just under 30 per cent. of the Civil Service Department contribution to the recently announced public expenditure cuts. However, as a result of the April 1975 Budget the Department was already committed to a reduction in expenditure; and the estimated saving on the Edinburgh Centre represents about 14 per cent. of the relevant overall reduction now to be achieved.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

asked the Minister for the Civil Service what is his estimate of the net savings that will arise from the closure of the Edinburgh Civil Service College after allowing for the transfer of the Edinburgh centre activities to other training establishments.

Mr. Charles R. Morris

The net saving to the Vote for the Central Management of the Civil Service arising from the Civil Service College is estimated to the closure of the Edinburgh Centre of be £0.5 million in a full year at 1975, prices. Certain other savings which cannot at present be quantified will arise on other Votes.
