HC Deb 14 April 1976 vol 909 c618W
Mr. Mikardo

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what arrangements are made in prisons to assist those who have been granted bail but have been unable to contact sureties.

Dr. Summerskill

There are staff specially chosen to help and advise on bail at all prisons which receive prisoners in custody or committed in custody for trial or sentence. Every effort is made to get in touch with sureties and, where the facilities exist, prisoners are normally able to use the telephone for this purpose.

Mr. Mikardo

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many defendants in a recent convenient period were received into prison after being granted bail, and how many remained in prison for more than two days and how many for more than a week.

Dr. Summerskill

I regret that this information is not readily available and could be obtained only at disproportionate effort and cost.
