HC Deb 08 April 1976 vol 909 c257W
Mr. Beith

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he will advise highway authorities that, in the present economic situation, they should not undertake general replacement and renewal of road signs except where this is essential in the interests of road safety or necessitated by road improvements.

Dr. Gilbert

In answer to a Question by my hon. Friend the Member for Nuneaton (Mr. Huckfield) on 24th July last I forecast economies on road maintenance but assured the House that operations affecting road safety should be substantially unchanged—a proviso which was mentioned in Circular 125/75. I do not think any special advice about road signs is needed.
