HC Deb 08 April 1976 vol 909 cc258-9W
Mr. George

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment when the investigation being conducted by the Health and Safety Commission into the construction and operation of road tankers transporting hazardous chemicals will be published.

Dr. Gilbert

The Chairman of the Health and Safety Commission informs me that the Health and Safety Executive is making a review of the legislation controlling the conveyance by road of hazardous substances, the conclusions of which will, it is intended, form a basis for future legislative proposals.

Mr. George

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many accidents involving road tankers transporting hazardous chemicals have been reported by the police.

Dr. Gilbert

The Chairman of the Health and Safety Commission informs me that 15 accidents of this nature were investigated by the Health and Safety Executive during 1975. None of them was reported by the police.

Mr. George

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he is satisfied with the operation of the Hazchem Scheme, the voluntary warning code for tankers carrying hazardous chemicals.

Dr. Gilbert

The emergency services have commented favourably on the scheme, but I am disappointed at the slow adoption of the scheme by some sections of industry.
