HC Deb 05 April 1976 vol 909 cc13-4W
Mr. Willey

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what are the specific requirements upon which the local management stated, as recorded in the report of the closure of Greenwell Drydocks Ltd. prepared by Touche Ross and Co., that, in order to ensure the long-term viability of the company, expenditure of £750,000 is required in the next few years.

Mr. Kaufman

The estimate of £750,000 capital expenditure provided by Greenwell Drydocks to Touche Ross was not prepared on the instructions of the Department. I regret that no further information about this estimate is available.

Mr. Willey

asked the Secretary of State for Industry whether he will give the details of the assets of Greenwell Dry-docks Ltd. which cost Sunderland Shipbuilders £1,255,000, and which are owned by Sunderland Shipbuilders.

Mr. Kaufman

The assets of Greenwell Drydocks which cost £1,255,000 and which are owned by Sunderland Shipbuilders were given by Touche Ross & Co. in their report to the Department as: land and buildings, £891,000; plant and machinery, £364,000.

Mr. Willey

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what use Sunderland Shipbuilders propose to make of the assets of Greenwell Drydocks at present owned by Sunderland Shipbuilders.

Mr. Kaufman

Sunderland Shipbuilders have no immediate plans to use the assets of Greenwell Drydocks. They will maintain the assets on a care and maintenance basis.
