HC Deb 05 April 1976 vol 909 cc12-3W
Mr. Willey

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what are the details of £25,000 provided for compensation and £50,000 in lieu of notice in the cost to North-East Coast Shiprepairers Ltd. of the closure of Greenwell Drydocks.

Mr. Kaufman

These sums were contingency estimates provided to cater for any ex gratia compensation payments which might have to be made, or any need there might be for payment of wages in lieu of notice for men who became prematurely redundant.

Mr. Trotter

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what percentage reduction there has been in the labour force of North-East Coast Shiprepairers as a result of the closure of Greenwell's yard at Sunderland.

Mr. Kaufman

There will be about a 14 per cent. reduction in the labour force of North-East Coast Shiprepairers as a result of the closure of Greenwell's yard at Sunderland.

Mr. Trotter

asked the Secretary of State for Industry how many administrative staff are employed at the headquarters of North-East Coast Shiprepairers; and what reduction in their number is being made as a result of the closure of Greenwell's Drydock and dismissal of the labour force at that yard.

Mr. Kaufman

Ten administrative staff are employed at the headquarters of North-East Coast Shiprepairers Ltd. whose work relates to the group as a whole rather than the individual group subsidiaries. At the present time North-East Coast Shiprepairers have no plans to reduce the numbers employed.
