HC Deb 12 November 1975 vol 899 cc762-3W
Mr. Grocott

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prisoners were classified as Category A prisoners in 1970, 1972 and 1974, respectively.

Dr. Summerskill

At 31st December in each case the numbers were 207, 241 and 236.

Mr. Grocott

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what would be the savings to public funds if each prisoner serving 12 months had his period of imprisonment reduced by one week.

Dr. Summerskill

The small reduction in the daily average prison population which would be effected by this proposal would have only a small impact on the overall cost of the prison system, a substantial part of which does not vary with minor fluctuations in the prison population.

Mr. Grocott

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prisoners were serving life sentences in 1972, 1973 and 1974 respectively.

Mr. Alexander W. Lyon

On 31st December in each of the years mentioned: 888,975 and 1,070 respectively. These include persons detained during Her Majesty's pleasure under Section 53(1) of the Children and Young Persons Act 1933 or for life under Section 53(2) of that Act, but not persons who had been previously released on licence and subsequently recalled to prison.
