HC Deb 12 November 1975 vol 899 c762W
Mr. Grocott

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what has been the estimated cost to the taxpayer for the time spent in prison by the people charged with damaging the Headingley wicket.

Dr. Summerskill

It is not possible to isolate the cost of maintaining unsentenced prisoners since some prisons hold both this and other categories of inmate. The cost properly attributable to maintenance of the four prisoners remanded in custody for varying periods following the Headingley incident would in any case be small, since the cost of running the prison system includes substantial expenditure that is not directly related to individual inmates.
