HC Deb 12 November 1975 vol 899 cc763-4W
Mr. Macfarlane

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many manslaughter convictions there were in 1971, 1972, 1973 and the first six months of 1975; and what is the average length of sentence based upon those offenders currently in prison.

Mr. Alexander W. Lyon

195 persons were convicted of manslaughter in England and Wales in 1971: 217 in 1972: and 234 in 1973. Figures for 1975 are not yet available.

Persons sentenced to imprisonment for manslaughter may serve life sentences or determinate sentences, so that no meaningful average can be derived. However, of those currently serving determinate sentences the average length of prison sentence is six years nine months.
