HC Deb 10 November 1975 vol 899 cc478-9W
Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what is the projected advertising budget of his Department for 1975–76; and if he will give a breakdown by media, subjects and languages.

Mr. John Morris

My Department is likely to spend directly £2,500 on advertising in the Welsh language Press and £23,000 in the English language Press during the financial year. The subjects covered are mainly related to statutory orders and specialised posts.

A further sum of £4,000 is likely to be spent in all on my behalf by the Central Office of Information, mainly for local advertising in support of national campaigns. This sum which excludes expenditure on behalf of other Departments cannot readily be broken down into language components.

No television advertising is planned under either heading during the current financial year.

Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what was the total amount spent by his Department in each year from 1970 to 1974 on advertising, rent and rate rebates and allowances; and if he will break the amount down by languages.

Mr. John Morris

Information is not readily available in the form requested. Newspaper advertising of rent rebates and allowances is arranged jointly for England and Wales, but leaflets in Welsh and English are distributed to local authorities, libraries and citizens advice bureaux throughout Wales. Approximately £1,000 was spent in 1972–75 on printing leaflets in the Welsh language.
