HC Deb 10 November 1975 vol 899 cc477-8W
Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what is his estimate of the increase in numbers eligible for free milk from 17th November; what plans has he to inform families of their rights; how much has been spent on advertising the change in income limits to date; in what media and language; and how much is planned to be spent this year.

Mr. John Morris

There will be no change in the arrangements for providing milk in schools on 17th November. The new arrangements coming into force on that date relate to the remission of the charge for school dinner.

Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many children claimed free milk in Wales in each year from 1970 to 1975; and what is his latest estimate of the number eligible.

Mr. John Morris

The number of pupils receiving free milk has been as follows:

1970 252,523
1971 120,644
1972 126,819
1973 129,359
1974 130,741
1975 Not yet available
.

There is no comprehensive information on eligibility. Free milk is available to children who qualify on grounds of age or health or who attend special schools. A small proportion of children who are eligible on grounds of age choose not to receive milk. No information exists on the number of children who do not receive milk but who might be eligible on grounds of health.
